Crossing the border from Mexico to Belize is relatively easy and hassle free. Most backpackers will take the ADO bus from Mexico to Belize City. You can catch this bus anywhere in Quintana Roo to Belize City. A lot of people stop in Bacalar, Mexico for a night or two before crossing but you can leave straight from Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, or Tulum or where ever the ADO bus connects. The ADO bus is not expensive and is quite comfortable. From Bacalar we spent about 200 pesos. The bus will first stop exiting Mexico where you’ll be asked one by one to enter a room, pay the tourist tax (in cash only) and then have your passport stamped. Do not forget cash, and do not forget your passport!!! Watch your things on the bus too – someone on our bus had his money and phone stolen and didn’t realize until we were crossing the border at 3 am. We all pitched in and were able to pay for him to cross.. otherwise not sure what he would have done!
The bus will then stop into Belize and you’ll line up to speak with a customs security agent where they’ll ask you the purpose of your travel, etc etc. This part was super quick and the Belize border side is quite cute!
When you arrive in Belize City it is highly recommended you take a taxi where ever you’re going – even if it’s a 10 minute walk. Taxi’s are very inexpensive. Ours cost us just 2 USD per person to get to the ferry terminal for Caye Caulker.
